This is an historical film and therefore open to debate. It has it's detractors, specifically people who consider the story to have been a little different. However, if you take a step back and bear in mind all the flavours of all the opinions, then you can enjoy, if that is the right word, this sensational film. Messner is that overused contemporary figure "the living legend". If he were British, he'd be regarded in the UK with the best British achievements. As a foreigner he's less covered. In climbing circles he's a demi-god. Solo or alpine climbing on the biggest mountains in the world, without oxygen. The big 8, 14, whatever, he's done it. But in the process, on this mountain, he lost his brother. Aside from the story, the cinematography is unbelievably good. The direction, the images, the editing, the screenplay, the acting... it's all good. If you're not interested in climbing, is it worth watching? Probably. People who push the boundaries, who are focussed and perhaps a touch ruthless, who make enemies as well as friends, they remain fascinating and instructive. We can see in them all that we are not, or will not be. A very moving film.
